Linux Kernel 3.8.3 has been released recently bringing more changes and bug fixes. In this article, we will see how to install this new kernel in Ubuntu/Linux Mint. For users preferring to install the kernel manually, please go here.

  •     CIFS: Fix missing of oplock_read value in smb30_values structure

  •     drm/i915: Fix Haswell/CRW PCI IDs

  •     ARM: 7663/1: perf: fix ARMv7 EVTYPE_MASK to include NSH bit

  •     md/raid1,raid10: fix deadlock with freeze_array()

  •     ath9k_htc: fix signal strength handling issues

Linux Kernel 3.8.3 Installation (Main)

Open the terminal and enter these commands:

cd /tmp
wget http://dl.dropbox.com/u/47950494/upubuntu.com/kernel-3.8.3 -O kernel-3.8.3
chmod +x kernel-3.8.3 
sudo sh kernel-3.8.3 
sudo reboot

if you are encountering unexpected troubles while upgrading to this new kernel you can revert back to the stock kernel with the commands below.

Linux Kernel 3.8.3 Removal (Uninstall)

For complete removal of this kernel from your system, enter this command:

sudo apt-get purge linux-image-3.8.3*
